چکیده

There is much evidence that regurgitated gastric juice may injure the oesophagus, destroying the surface layers and causing inflammation in surviving tissues. The lesion referred to variously as peptic, digestion, or reflux oesophagitis is common and may be serious, even fatal, in its immediate or late effects or both. The pathology of the disease will be discussed in a later communication. There is no general agreement at present about the nature of the closure mechanisms at the cardia, which are, as Barrett and Franklin (1949) said,

Diverging Trends in Recent Population-Based Survival Rates in Oesophageal and Gastric Cancer

BACKGROUND Survival trends in oesophageal and gastric cancer need to be updated. A nationwide Swedish population-based study in 1961-2009 was based on registry data. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS Relative survival rate, i.e. the ratio of the observed to the expected survival, adjusted for age, sex, and calendar period, and presented with 95% confidence intervals (CI), was the main outcome me...

Combination of gastric atrophy, reflux symptoms and histological subtype indicates two distinct aetiologies of gastric cardia cancer.

INTRODUCTION Atrophic gastritis is a risk factor for non-cardia gastric cancer, and gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) for oesophageal adenocarcinoma. The role of atrophic gastritis and GORD in the aetiology of adenocarcinoma of the cardia remains unclear. We have investigated the association between adenocarcinoma of the different regions of the upper gastrointestinal tract and atrophic ...

We investigated the association between body mass index (BMI), height and risk of oesophageal and gastric cardia adenocarcinoma. METHODS The Netherlands Cohort Study was initiated in 1986. All participants (n = 120,852), aged 55-69 years, completed a self ...

The oesophageal cardia and regurgitation.

AN understanding of the mechanisms governing the integrity of the cardia is of immense importance to the anaesthetist. The cardia is intimately concerned with the vital problems of vomiting, regurgitation, and aspiration of gastric contents into the lungs, and the lethal potentialities of these complications are only too well known. If any proof be needed, the Report on Deaths Associated with A...
